Magnus Reid (b. 1989, Perth, Western Australia) is a self-taught painter based in Mallorca. Originally a chef, he began painting in 2020 as a creative outlet after long nights working in London restaurants. What started as a way to unwind quickly developed into a serious artistic practice.
Reid’s paintings are raw and richly textured, combining loose brushwork, rough surfaces and unexpected shifts in colour. Floral forms, birds and human figures recur throughout his work, gradually becoming more ambiguous and surreal. Beneath their playful appearance, his paintings explore ideas of freedom, nature, spirituality and emotional connection.
With the time he has developed these themes further, introducing sun-headed figures, ritual-like scenes and a more narrative dimension to his work. Rather than offering fixed interpretations, Reid leaves elements unresolved, allowing viewers to find their own connections within each composition.
His background in food, music and art informs an open and experimental approach to creativity. Reid’s work is held in private collections across the UK, United States and Australia. He currently lives and works between Mallorca and London.
