Relics recovered from the depths, Impossible Wrecks brings together a body of sculptural works shaped by traditional craft, material experimentation and an imagined narrative of discovery.
Impossible Wrecks, presented in collaboration with Vasto Gallery, brings a new body of ceramic and metal sculptures by Barcelona-born, Mexico City-based multidisciplinary artist Pol Agustí to the cave at Etesian Gallery.
Created in collaboration with local artisans in the mountains of Michoacán, the works draw on traditional techniques and methods while bringing together a variety of materials and forms. Rooted in a process of exchange between the artist and local craft traditions, the sculptures occupy a space between contemporary art, object and artefact.
The title of the exhibition reflects Agustí’s desire to root the works in the island through a narrative of discovery. Imagined as relics recovered from beneath the sea, the sculptures are brought into the cave at Etesian as though they have just been unearthed after an unknown journey. Arranged in an almost ceremonial manner, they evoke archaeological remains from a story that is deliberately left unresolved.
Together, the works create an atmosphere of quiet mystery, where material, craft and fiction come together to suggest objects with a history that can be sensed, but never fully known.
