"Milo has found in the streets and landscapes of Menorca a space for contemplation and rest."
The exhibition is the result of a two-month residency undertaken by the artist in collaboration with the gallery in Ciutadella. During this time, Matthieu immersed himself in the colours, light, landscapes and distinctive rhythm of the island; an experience that has profoundly shaped the new series of paintings presented in this exhibition.
Stillness in the Between, which could be translated as The Stillness of the In-Between, emerges from this encounter with the island and from his desire to bring to his canvases this different way of inhabiting time that Menorca has revealed to him: one that is more attentive, more conscious, and more open to presence and to everything that unfolds when one simply allows oneself to be.
This experience comes together on the canvases with a visual universe deeply rooted in Matthieu’s Haitian heritage. Although he did not grow up in Haiti, the traditional art and culture that were always present throughout his childhood helped shape a rich “Haitian imaginary” that remains central to his practice.
In this new series, this visual and symbolic heritage encounters the Mediterranean experience. The result is a body of work in which memory, identity and place intertwine, inhabiting the in-betweenspace evoked by the title: between movement and stillness, between what is familiar and what emerges when we change our surroundings.
