Etesian presents Bathers, the first solo exhibition in Menorca by the australian artist Ces McCully.
From the artist
The bathers take my fascination with polarities to a human setting or stage, where disguise gives way to exposure through performative rituals of display. These are not relaxed bodies at leisure, but figures held in tension; consciously arranged, balancing against one another, at times reduced to glyph-like forms that sit somewhere between body and architecture.
My search for balance remains constant throughout the series, tracing back to the first art form I encountered as a child: ballet. Years of learning to create form, rhythm and emotional tension through the body alone continue to shape the structure of my paintings.
The hand-tufted surfaces remain central to the work, holding together opposing impulses within the practice: softness and structure, masculine and feminine associations, control and imperfection. In an increasingly digital culture, the works insist instead on slowness, touch and the visible evidence of human making.
This June, Etesian brings together three solo exhibitions, each presented in a different space within the gallery.
The programme celebrates the unique vision of three artists whose works, while distinct in approach and medium, share a strong sense of presence and individuality. Moving from one room to the next, visitors are invited to experience three separate worlds and the unexpected conversations that emerge between them.
Together, these exhibitions mark the beginning of the summer season and reflect the gallery’s ongoing commitment to presenting thoughtful and engaging contemporary art.
